Giving proper care is important for any pet. But it is especially important for cats.

Cats really haven’t changed that much from their wild ancestors. So their instincts are strong. Their needs, while few, are not that flexible.

The litter box. Cats need to feel secure in their litter area. This is a vulnerable time. We wouldn’t like people bursting into our bathroom while we are busy in there, would we?

Common mistake: Putting the litter box in such an out of the way place it doesn’t get cleaned often enough, and we aren’t aware of any other issues the cats might have with it.

Mealtimes. Cats are predators who spent a great deal of their waking hours planning the ambush of their prey. This is why they love to play with toys; it simulates the hunt. But they also need a bit of ceremony over food.

Common mistake: Dumping their food in a bowl and leaving the room. It’s not silly to make some fuss over mealtimes, both before and after. Let the cat enjoy some of the thrill that domestication takes away.

Scratching behavior. Cats don’t just sharpen their claws when they scratch things. They also relieve tension, exercise their muscles, and make territory gestures.

Common mistake: Getting a scratching post the cat doesn’t like and won’t use. So many scratching posts have fatal flaws. That means few cats will find them appealing.

Cat instincts can drive us crazy… or, we can work with them.

And find our tasks are made so much easier.

And our cat, happier.

We agreed to take care of the cat. We think we’re taking care of the cat. But if we are not taking care of the cat the way the cat needs to be taken care of, the cat is unhappy.

Out of all the complaints about cats, the biggest is probably that our cat is not the loving pet who seeks us out as much as we would like.

And… we tend to blame the cat.

But maybe, just maybe, it’s not their fault. Maybe it’s not even our fault.

Because aren’t you doing your best? No matter how willing we are, if we don’t know what we’re doing wrong, we’ll never get it right.

It’s considered common wisdom that the cat is easy to care for. And that’s true, but only if we know how.

Get a complete, step by step care guide, designed to head off and solve problems, and see what your cat can do.

See what your cat is capable of.

We want our cat to be healthy and happy. So food is a very important part of the care we provide.

It’s not just to keep them going, it’s to keep our relationship going!

But feeding cats in our home comes with some built-in problems, because a cat’s food experience as our pet is so radically different from their experience as hunters in the wild.

Once upon a time, cats were working members of the family, prized for their ratting ability. Even now, many parts of the world relies upon the cat’s legendary abilities in the vermin catching field to keep human food supplies safe.

But as our pet, and with the increasing understanding of the risks our pet cat takes when they go outside, we often express our love best by keeping them indoors and providing all their food.

Which is fine with the cat. Except there might be hidden traps in this scenario that will undercut our best intentions.

The most common problems with feeding our cat come from:

the wrong kind of food

not recognizing their special water needs

not making a special point of mealtime

Cat 911 includes a comprehensive care program to cover all your feeding questions.

Take the worry and guesswork out of what, after all, is a simple process… when we understand what the cat needs.

It comes with the territory. Cats are nocturnal; natural night time hunters.

We, generally, are not.

This problem can strike at any age. Knowing that it’s a form of flattery doesn’t help that much. Flattery? Of course it is! When the cat bothers us, they want attention from us.

We often assume that whenever the cat bothers us, they want to be fed. This is reinforced when we try to “bribe” them with food to leave us alone. Cats are predators; they aren’t going to pass up food. But often, they want attention.

That’s all. Just our unfocused attention.

We need to let them know that when it’s dark out, they can have closeness with us, but not a lot of attention or play. Cats understand far more than we give them credit for.

My book, Cat 911, is full of tips and strategies to help the cat understand that when we are asleep, we are no longer available to fulfill their needs.

By taking care of those needs properly, and communicating that sleeptime is quiet time, we’ll have a cat who can amuse themselves during the night.

Well, no one. But the great thing about cats is:

They want to use their litter box.

Well, why don’t they, then?

Cat litter box problems come from messing up the cat’s litter box situation.

What could be wrong? It’s usually a combination of factors:

Bad litter box setup, making it hard to get to, threatening, or unsafe.

Wrong kind of box, making cleaning difficult, or cleaning it in a way that drives away the cat.

Not realizing the cat is sick, and they are trying to tell us.

There are so many variables in any given situation, depending on the person, and their cat. But the good news is, once a litter situation is fixed, the cat is happy, and the problem goes away.

My step by step cat training plan doesn’t just train the cat.

It trains you, too.

Vets who declaw cats or kittens tell people everything will be fine. The cat doesn’t mind, and the cat doesn’t change.

I’m assuming the vets aren’t just lying through their teeth. In any case, the vet doesn’t see it, because they don’t live with the cat.

The cat does mind. Even if the cat doesn’t have pain for months or years after the operation (this happens a lot) and even if the cat still seems to walk properly (it may seem like they’re okay at first, but as they age they will get joint problems because their feet don’t work right anymore,) the cat knows their important tools for defense and getting food are now, somehow, gone.

So the cat becomes permanently nervous, and guess what? Scratching is stress relief for a cat. Without this important way to relax, the cat gets tenser and tenser. Because all that scratching isn’t just to keep their nails in shape. It keeps their whole body in shape; it’s their way of working out. Without being able to pull against resistance, now that their claws are gone, they can’t get the right exercise.

So things get worse.

The cat does change. Usually, the cat turns into a biter.

Because they know they can’t hunt or defend themselves anymore. It’s only natural for an animal to keep track of their tools, even if they don’t need them right now. In the wild, cats use their claws to keep themselves fed. They know they are missing, and their instincts don’t go away because a person opens a can every night.

Tense, nervous, and in pain either from their mangled feet or their body aches, the cat either becomes a ghost who hides because they feel vulnerable to anything that comes by, or the cat becomes a raging lunatic no one can pet.

There’s far better alternatives!

Use the easy techniques in my cat book, Cat 911, to solve the scratching problem.

And keep the cat.
