They might have trouble imagining why we’d want to do some of the things we do, but many of their actions show they sorta grasp what needs to be done, when.

The key to how cats are able to “see through other eyes” lies in their hunting strategies. When they ambush, they have to be aware of how they prey could see or sense them. When they attack, they have to guess which way the prey will run.
This makes cats adept at the psychology of other living things. They enjoy studying, experimenting, and manipulating others, for any number of reasons. It is this skill which cats use to observe, imitate, and interact with us.
Olwyn will do something cute, and wander into another room, and we follow to see more cute; and discover she wants something in that room. I’m impressed, Olwyn. That’s James Bond level manipulation.
That’s what I encourage my cats to do. It’s adorable.
Some of my cats, like Reverend Jim, can only act excitable and desperate while I figure out what he wants. But he’s getting better, and that’s still preferable to RJ wanting something and I couldn’t figure it out.
That is why any explanations, for anything, will accrue a great benefit in communication. Our cats find shared experiences very enjoyable; yet many cats don’t get enough of this “group activity.”
For us, the social benefits are exactly what we wanted in a pet.
Cats will discuss any part of our day, no matter how minute, with as much enthusiasm as we put into it. Then they will tell us about one of their activities that day. We don’t need the details, we can still show interest.
It’s doesn’t matter if we have all the details; if we can figure out the mood.
Because sometimes all our cat wants is a shared moment.

There’s more ways to understand our cat with The Way of Cats than the article you are reading now. See all of my posts on WHY CATS DO THAT.

Dear Werebear,
I just wanted to write you a note about your article. I truly believe that my cat does understand the ways of the world, especially emotions and feelings. There is nothing quite the same of having a purring headbutt across your leg after a long day. My cat Nathan always comes around just when I need him the most. Thank you again for writing this article, I really enjoyed it!
Thanks, Michelle. That was a lovely compliment.
