My brother's family has three cats and three kids. He complained about how the cats were "useless." I told him, "Some people have been known to use their pets to teach children about responsibility."

My very favorite cat myth of all time is that if you bathe a cat, it will die. I can't believe the number of people I've met who believe that.

I recently had to leave my two furry girls at a cat motel (very nice that is), which kind of broke my heart even if it was for less than a week. Well, when I took them back I got even more proof of how much they missed me: when I opened the doors to their cages, both Mimi and Jane came straight to me and sat on me, purring and showing me so much love. They were thee for more than 20 minutes, just sitting on me, rubbing their heads against me, purring, I believe that if they could cry they would. Which, I might add, is very unusual of them, because they usually don't like standing too close to each others or very up close and personal cuddles. But I believe they missed me like I missed them. And I am in no way making them any smarter than they are.

I worry about people (especially children) who have such negative feelings about cats (and other kinds of pets, too). Perhaps no one has talked to them, fussed over them when they were sick, played with them, etc.

I saw all of those things just today, when I brought my oldest cat Sophie back from the vet. Her "nieces" chirped when they saw her, came and washed her face, rubbed against her softly, and laid close to her when Sophie settled down. Even the big boy, the youngest, brought her his favorite toy, dropping it in front of her with a gentle head-butt.

What a person doesn't see in a cat, may be invisible to him in people, too.

Yes, you make a good point, Bill. I guess prejudices are just as unthinking for anyone.

Just replace the word "cat" in that rant to "a slur for a race or religion that I don't belong to" and you can really understand the mindset behind it. It's "hate for no real reason, other than--umm...I HATE those people! Not that I actually know any!"
