Nice article. Nice to know the eye damage thing would be minimal, as have just bourght one to amuse our gang of (neutered!) ratting semi-ferals. The older cats seem to cotton on quite fast, but the kitties are still learning the skills of ratting, and it's really helping them out :D So tbh, them being a bit ready to keep going's not a bad thing. Also, it gives me a chance to observe them with the lights out to make sure the bully kitteh isn't always picking on his cousins...
There's nowt wrong with a bit of laser fun, provided there's something tangible to do at the end of that toy. Lovely cat names too - I'm afraid ours might be too numorous to mention :D

Just checked this out, little Tesla loves to play with the laser, but when the play finished, I noticed that he just sat there, his tail twitching. After reading this, i tried it out, turned from the laser to his favorite ball, and he loved it! Now he's passed out sleeping next to me. Thanks for the good advice!

Thank you for this. It really helped me out as I came on here to find out of the light was dangerous for their eyes, but you've confirmed my concern about their mental anguish and egos. The laser pointer will be used for the flashlight on the other side of it from now on. Thanks for the great information.

Rewarding insight about why they are unsatisfied and how playing with a tangible toy last gives them satisfaction...worked like a charm and I think they had even more fun with the toy.

I have a 10 year old cat who is indoors all the time. He's always been fit and healthy and playful but I've hesitated to use laser pointers as toys because I was worried about his eyes, but this is reassuring. I started playing regularly with the laser with him a few weeks ago, and now he actually complains if I don't use it with him. In addition, he's become incredibly fast and agile, and his stamina has obviously increased quite a bit. Woe be unto the mouse that shows its head in our house now. After reading these posts, I make sure to congratulate him after a session, and I show him the pointer itself. He doesn't seem to care whether he can actually touch it or not - he just loves to play. Good idea to give him something tangible afterwords. I'll try that. :)
