The Joys of Interspecies Communication

Why do I get such a kick out of cats?

Probably because I’m also a science fiction fan. I loved reading about the challenges of two very different cultures struggling to understand and communicate. Now, I can have it in my own home.

I think humans intrinsically enjoy interspecies communication. Why else do kids love cartoons with talking animals? Why else do we still enjoy it when we grow up? From laughing at an animal in a funny hat to bonding deeply with our pets, we seek out and embrace these loving moments; friends from very different places.

It expands our brains, our hearts, and our lives.

I’ve always had pets, from goldfish to a Capuchin monkey. (My mother learned never to send me and my dad to the pet store alone.) Out of all possible pets that fit into a house, I have come to find that cats suit me best; and it’s because of their particular way of communicating.

It has drama, humor, reciprocal effort, and mutual care.

Isn’t training easier if we just tell the cat what we’d like? Isn’t training easier when the cat tells us what they need?

By agreeing with the cats on certain basics, and further negotiating on details, we can come up with simple maintenance checks to keep our cats happy and healthy. Unlike a houseplant or a goldfish, cats will tell us if there has been a breakdown in the system.

Its a hoot. Seeing and understanding the cat’s ways of mediating with their fellow cats, as well as with their humans, means hours of entertainment and drama.

It means we have mutual trust. When we and the cats play games with each other, we reveal the playful side of our relationship, where we are good friends.

Friends do things for each other.

Explore strange new worlds and live with beings from another culture. Explore cat civilization: three or more cats.

There is a tangled myth about cats, half true, but, deeper, untrue. Cats are low maintenance; except for their emotional lives.

It’s a myth that cats don’t want a deeper relationship with us.

It’s a myth that to achieve such a thing is difficult.
