The difference between queen and princess

While all cats like to have their own way, they vary in how much they want it.

Cats who have a strong will to power will be the most difficult cats to persuade otherwise. It’s not so much that these cats are driven to dominate. Dominating is simply what they see as the most efficient way of getting what they want.

Nowhere is this more evident than in feline females.

We can find any trait in either a male or a female. But there are differences in how these traits are expressed. Female cats with a strong Will to Power are either queens, or princesses.

Olwyn observesTortoiseshells, even dilute tortoiseshells, like Olwyn, have a reputation for such behavior, but it can appear in any coat color.

They use their powers of observation to study our patterns of behavior, and try out new ones to get our attention.

They learn how to use our presence in a room to their advantage. They can figure out when we are most vulnerable to giving out play and time and treats.

It is hard to say no to a cat who wants something very much, and is willing to perform great feats to let us know. Queens and Princesses tend to be given to the grand gesture and the theatrical exaggeration of the situation. They will talk to us and make their positions clear.

Yet some are Queens even as kittens, and some remain Princesses all their life. The difference is in each cat; some have great dignity and need a little deference, and some are cuddly and cute for as long as they live.

In either case, it is our pleasure to be of service. It’s true, every cat likes to be spoiled.

But Queens and Princesses expect it.

This post was about how our new kitten is fitting into a family of two humans, and two Beta boys of widely varying age. See all my Olwyn posts.

Cleo (a 9-year-old female Maine Coon) is certainly a little fluffy princess. We’ve dealt with her imperious demands by making it very clear that she has to ask for things politely, and is never rewarded for attempting to take something. She has figured out that if she sits next to me and waits patiently while I’m eating something that smells delicious to her, I will often reward her with a tidbit. Fortunately, she’s never learned the classic Maine Coon trick of flicking the long, fluffy tail over the edge of the coffee table and into your food, which often prompts humans to reject the dish and its new cat-hair condiment.

We had to do the same thing with our Princess. She must be polite, and her treat will come. Probably sooner than later…

I often sit in bed with my laptop with my back mostly reclined. My tortoiseshell will sit on my chest (in between me and the laptop) and meow right into my face when she’s bored or wants something. It’s hard not to give in.

The other cat, who is half siamese, jumps onto the refrigerator and meows until I or my boyfriend get up to pet her. It’s a recent development that has both of us puzzled. But maybe it’s just her queen behavior as you say :)
