Starring Cardboard, as the Basic Cat Toy

What cat toy is recyclable, easy to clean up, versatile, and cheap to obtain?

Cardboard! (I gave it away in the headline.)

Olwyn, a year old, loves to bite into any cardboard box, so we give them to her and let them sit around for a few weeks. Everyone loves to hide in, chew and slash, and jump on top of a big cardboard box.

But there are other ways cardboard works for us. We can make things with cardboard for the cats to play with. Cats will find the process very interesting, and then when they get the end result, they are thrilled.

Corrugated cardboard, the kind grocery stock and moving and mailing boxes are made of, has a near-perfect texture for cats to sink their teeth and claws into. We don’t mind them doing it because we are going to recycle this box, anyway.

We get rid of the box whenever we like, and get our cat… a new box. We do a lot of our shopping online, so we always have boxes in the pipeline.

Yes, cats leave shreds of cardboard around. But they don’t stain or stick, and won’t ruin the carpet if left overnight, either.

  1. BOXES! Great for sleeping in, sleeping on, or playing inside! Yes, I have 3 cats, and they have 3 different styles of box luv. But they all love a new box.

I work in retail, so I have a large variety of boxes to choose from, and I refresh them every 3 months. If you need a box, most small retail stores are happy to give them away–it’s less for us to break up and toss out. And don’t be so picky that you won’t take the broken ones–all they need is a strip of packing tape.

Warehouse clubs have boxes to be grabbed at the checkout, including ones for big plastic bottles that are open on the top and most of the sides. Turned over, they look like a bridge. “Under the box” cats like these as much as “on the box” cats.

Great LOLcat pic! Hmm, why would a cat owner need all those black light bulbs, hmm, I wonder! ;D

A customer came into my store and asked if we had any spare boxes, big ones. Yes, I said, but we need them for our business, so I can’t give you a lot. That’s fine! he said, I just need one big one! My cat’s having kittens!
I gave him one and we enthusiastically talked about the upcoming big event as he left, while I thought Should I ask him? Should I ask him for one of the kittens?
And I DIDN’T. I sat on a stool, knowing that, yes, I’ve never had a cat although I’d thought about getting one for years, and now I know that I really want one. Why didn’t I ask that guy?! It’s not like someone’s going to just come up to me and offer me one!
As I sat there moping, a coworker was on the phone next to me. He said “uh-huh” and “I’ll ask, I’ll ask!” a lot during the conversation. He hung up and asked me sarcastically, “So, Bill, do you want a free kitten?”
I startled him with a vigorous “YES.”

And that is how Kill Kill Kamushka became my first cat. Because of a box.

I adored that story. More proof that you and Killsy are meant for each other.

Our cat Jasper loves those reinforced shopping bags, the kind that stay open even when they’re laying on their side. He creeps inside and goes to sleep, but loves it when you flick the outside as he can play quite happily if you do that! He does love cardboard boxes too though – although he sometimes nibbles them and makes a mess too. Hey ho – can’t win ‘em all!
