Shelter Survivor Finds a Home

Of course, we think our kitten, Olwyn, is magic. But she is! Turns out, she got another cat a home.

D's new catI felt so much for Olwyn’s littermate; the tortoiseshell kitten who was the other survivor of that litter. She was in better shape than Olwyn, and I knew she would be a charming addition to any family.

So I sent a link to a friend who lives near that shelter, asking her to send it around to her local contacts. My friend has two cats, but her grandson wanted a cat of his own. (I said nephew in the newsletter. My bad!)

This is such a wonderful picture. He’s got a gift!

Here’s how it happened:

JenniFurMy email got the Cat Fever started.

Armed with my tips on choosing and blending, they went to the shelter. But of course, we have to find the cat who connects with us.

He fell in love.

My grandson D is so happy with Penny but we are handling the melding carefully. Poor Penny has been in a cage since she went to the shelter at 6 months so just getting used to D’s room has taken some time. Luckily I have a large cage we put into his room where she feels most secure. We leave the door to the bedroom closed and the cage door open so she can explore. I call her Dora the Explorer!

Penny finds loveBlessings on D for choosing a black cat. They are often overlooked in the shelters, as Penny’s story shows.

All that time in a cage at the shelter had made Penny feel a little agoraphobic about being out and about in a house, but my friend handled it wonderfully.

When she is in her cage with the cage door shut I leave the bedroom door open so Fleasha and Garfield/Punk can visit. The hissing has stopped and the growling is minimal. It will take more time but I have hope!!!

Penny is the best door prizeHer hope was not misplaced.

In the weeks since, Ebony/JenniFur/Penny has made friends with Fleasha.

(The more nicknames, the more facets of personality we discover in each cat.)

The people in the house, my friend tells me, were enchanted from the start.

Here is Ebony, now Penny Fu-Fu (or Foof for short). One is of D with Penny (above.) Another is her resting after ‘watching kitty TV’ – aka looking out the window. My cats are inside cats. In the other photo she is sleeping in the coveted ‘door prize’ box.

Oh, cats and boxes. The box story shows how well these cats are getting along.

I came home with a box cover which contained papers I had to sort. My cat Fleasha immediately jumped in it and claimed it as her bed. When Penny arrived she also claimed the box cover and they would take turns using it. I was finally able to locate another box cover so they now each have one. Fleasha and I came to a meeting of the minds about Foof but Punk still hisses at her.

Foof in her happy placeI’m sure Punk will come around, but in the meantime, Foof has a room of her own during the day when the humans are out.

I obviously found all the pictures so charming I couldn’t stop at just one.

I am so thrilled that such a lovely cat found such a good home. Happiness all around.

The only sad note is that Olwyn’s littermate is still waiting for a home. If you know anyone nearby, would you tell them a marvelous kitten is out there? Thanks!

  1. Alas, wrong of the country now. (I went to school at Clarkson in Potsdam).

Also, we’re still getting used to this summer’s shelter cat, Oscar the feline alarm clock.
