The cats now try to run a con on me where, if I’m scolding them, they run over to the scratching post and start scratching away, because they know I have to stop scolding and start praising.

That's hysterical! And so catlike.

Another helpful tool is Feliway spray applied to the things you don't want them to scratch. I don't know if there actually is something to their claim about the "pheromones" making the cat think that it's already scratched at that armchair or if they just don't like the smell, but it worked like magic when we got our new couch and armchair.

And praise. Lots and lots of praise. The cats now try to run a con on me where, if I'm scolding them, they run over to the scratching post and start scratching away, because they know I have to stop scolding and start praising.

If you don’t mind my asking, Pamela, what is your opinion of tendonectomy as a surgical alternative to declawing?

I think it's horrible. A cat's scratching needs can be taken care of with a few days of training and some cheap cardboard scratching boxes. I see no need to cripple the cat at any time.

I suppose that the solution often depends on the cat. Soft Paws and nail clipping may work for some cats but be a huge pain for others. If you don't mind my asking, Pamela, what is your opinion of tendonectomy as a surgical alternative to declawing?

Good point, Michael. A teething Labrador puppy is capable of gnawing through chair legs. Unsupervised, they will.

Hehehe, if you think cats are the worst, you should own a dog! I tell you, you need to dog proof your house as well! Or you must suffer through a lot of bad things :)

Love the post approval photo! Too cute! Also appreciate the information about scratching. My last cats were declayed, but the feline who is now entering my life has her front claws so I needed the advice!
