Give Them a Birthday

All my cats have birthdays. Whether they are accurate, or not.

Olwyn’s is pretty close; the vet who examined her at the shelter was working with a kitten who was too young to leave her mother. When we got Reverend Jim, he had likewise been examined by a vet at around three months, when there would be less of a margin for error in these estimates.

The trickiest time is when a vet declares the cat is over a year old and is “done growing,” when they are not, and can double in size over the next 18 months. This can help us know when a cat is fully mature, and assign another milestone, and get another idea for the cat’s birthday.

But we often get older cats, and we would have no idea when their birthday might be. Should we still give them a birthday?

Of course.

Some of the reasons are practical. We need to mark a time for the turning of the years with our cat. This will come in handy down the road, when our cat becomes more senior, and the vet will need to know at least how long we’ve had our cat.

But there’s also the impractical, which is just as important. It’s an excellent time to evaluate our cat’s abilities and skills, to announce how old they are and say how great they are.

We both will like that.

We don’t have to frost a cake with tuna to make our cat happy on their birthday. Special treats and a new toy are always appreciated, and at least once a year they should try something new or different.

Then there’s the fun thing; we will know their astrological sign. By this method, Olwyn is a Pisces, RJ is an Aries, and James Bond is a Taurus. And they are.

So if our cat is more of a cautious Earth sign than an impulsive Fire sign, we have narrowed down their possible birthday. Perhaps we will also do some thinking about our cat’s personality.

Look at everything a birthday does for our cat, and for us.

Be sure to bestow one.

  1. Today is DJ’s first birthday! But I think he’ll be a kitten for a looong time.

They all got mucho good food to celebrate, but of course Birthday Boy DJ got the most.

  2. WereBear says:

    Happy birthday to DJ!

  3. Kim L says:

Hi Pammy, I celebrate homecoming day as their birthday, if I don’t know when the birthday is. In Annie’s case, she had just barely turned six months of age (tooth loss showed that) so I knew she was born in May. I love celebrating homecoming days. And for the older rescue, this can work so nicely as a birthday as well.

  4. I also celebrate homecoming day. Why not? It’s no different than celebrating a birthday and then an anniversary. And any excuse to party with the kids is a good one!

Byron’s actual birthdate, being a rescue, is up to debate. The vet put his birthday within a day or 2 of Killsy’s, which works for me. I celebrate 6/16 as their mutual day.

  5. WereBear says:

Well, heck. There’s can’t be too many cat holidays.
