Gifts for Cat Lovers
Stocking Stuffers
How do we know what their cats like? We can’t go wrong with toys that look like mice, birds, or fish. Be as realistic as possible. Make the effort, if there is real fur or feathers on it, to see if the people who made it used ethical sources for their materials. Cat people care about that.
No one has enough wand toys, from the cat point of view. These provoke the liveliest play and can be operated from a chair.
Get them a movie the cat will enjoy, too.
One of our readers has The Cat Lover’s Gift Shop, at Cat and Caboodle.com.
I love the large assortment of colorful mugs.
There are all kinds of great cat-themed items.
More Fun
If they have a kitten and don’t have a Cheese Chase, they need one. They are compact and offer many levels of play, and will still amuse the cat the kitten will become.
If they are having troubles getting along, they might appreciate a Feliway pheromone dispenser, which is a scent humans can’t smell, but has a calming effect on cats. It also leads to pheromone jokes at convivial gatherings.
A cat bed or lounging pad is enjoyed by all, even if they have more than one cat. Cats will perform amusing antics as they see who wants it and how much. If it goes over particularly well, another one, next year, will be a thoughtful addition. The Meow Town Cat Cave is particularly well designed, offering both hiding and extra warmth.
Window perches are the kind of gift which doesn’t cost much, but the effort to find and install it will also be part of our gift. Cats love looking out of windows.
Bird feeders, for outside that window, are a great move; provided the person keeps their cats indoors. If not, such a gift, if used, would lead to distressing New Wave cinema. We don’t want that.
If they are readers, a book or two of cat memoirs are always a hit. Even if they have read it before, they might not have their own copy.
The Big Box.
Choose the right automatic litterbox and get some eternal gratitude. This is especially appreciated by those with arthritis, mobility problems, or even those who are busy and could use the time saving element.
I use this one, and in my opinion: There can be only one.
A nice piece of cat furniture is another gift that lasts for years. The Kitty Store Online offers many options. A good scratching post is inexpensive, yet offers great benefits, and people can never have too many.
Of course, there’s the category of gift known as “anything with a cat on it.” These can be fine gifts, but go a little further. Ask ourselves, “Would they like it even if it didn’t have a cat on it?” If the answer is NO, put it back.
Likewise, cat-themed clothing can be charming, as in clever sweaters that weave the cat into the design, or many artistic jewelry items. Or it can be completely unwearable, as in a shirt which has ears on springs or bearing a saying we know would be much too cutesy or denigrating for the person to publicly support. Be careful of light-hearted nightwear when you won’t ever be seeing it.
Remember, the cat lover on your list has more dimensions to them than the one “lens” of Cat Appreciator. If they like cats, they probably also like art or reading or music. They enjoy good times and bad movies and other things that might not have anything to do with cats.
Once in a while, we cat lovers feel a little chagrin that other people think liking cats has something wrong with it… and, in addition, that people only see them as someone with cats. Is having more than one cat so bizarre to some people? Sadly, yes.
So if you are always giving a cat themed gift… it’s not just a gift with a cat on it. It’s a gift for a person who loves cats.
Perspective can bring change.
