Fixing cats who won’t cuddle

What if we have messed up? Can we fix cats who won’t cuddle?

In Cats who won’t cuddle, I explained what we might be doing wrong that has drained the Cuddling Potential from our cats.

It is possible to make up lost ground.

Follow these tips to see if we can get more cuddling than we are getting now:

Respect. If we have been too aggressive in our cuddling for our cat’s comfort level, we should try the Fist of Friendship and Petting in Place to show our cat we want to meet them halfway.

Using our fist instead of reaching for them with an open handed grab, and the act of petting them without moving them; these take coercion out of our affectionate gestures. The biggest mistakes people make in asking for cuddles is that they start out too strong, presuming on a relationship that is not there… yet.

Rebuild. Instead of turning our cat off by overwhelming them, we should create situations where we become irresistible to investigate. Using moves like The Shift signal our cat that we are willing to humble ourselves to seek their affection.

By understanding the uses of Presence, we can figure out the ways we act which helps our cats feel loved and valued. Then, they can trust us. Then, they can enjoy being cuddled.

Reciprocate. Greeting our cat when we come home and making time to play with them; these can’t help but convey our regard. As I explain in Cat Poker, any time we create affection in our cat by doing something nice for them, this compels the cat to show us affection in return.

Another way we can make our overtures into requests is by handling our cat properly. When we realize that picking up a cat and taking them somewhere else is actually quite frightening to them, we can discover how an affection move like The Drape reassures them and builds their trust.

If we long to cuddle our cat like a baby, use the moves in The Forklift to get them used to such an unnatural state, and let them relax while they are in our arms.

Mr. WereBear and I have three cuddly cats. Part of how cuddly they are is certainly because we both use The Fine Art of Fussing to let them know how we feel.

Then they let us know how they feel.

To maximize our chances of getting maximum cuddles, we can choose a Cuddler. See how in this article: Cat Affection Moves: Cuddly Cats
