Cat Advantage: Expression Reading

I find it easy to read cat’s facial expressions. They are highly communicative with their face. So are we. This is a natural advantage we should cultivate.

People can increase their ability to do facial communication by being expressive when they talk to the cat, and seeing how the cat responds. Cat’s furry faces might not be as easy to interpret as a human’s, but there are remarkable parallels in how we express ourselves.

The round eyes, opened mouth, and gape of astonishment is the same for us and for cats. The furrowed brow for thinking, the sideways glance of disbelief, and the smiling mouth; these are common cues easy to find.

Look at the eyes, mouth, and eyebrows on a cat’s face where we would look when we are trying to understand what a person is saying. Seeing how the cat responds when we speak lovingly to them lets us see their happy expressions. What about a new toy? We can pick up interest and enjoyment in their faces when they play with their toys. Mealtime is always a great time to see them expressing themselves without restraint.

Cats are sending the signals all the time. We often look at their expressive bodies, tails, and ears because that is different from us, and requires study.

But the beauty of facial expression is that is more easily interpreted than we might think. Cats can be impassive, but with trust, and increased communication on our part, cats will make their expressions more mobile and easy to read. The cat is being encouraged to use this natural part of their communication set, so they will do so freely.

If we ever wonder why the cat is doing something, we can ask the cat. They will tell us what they are feeling. Always, we should listen to the cat’s face.

It is speaking volumes.
