I heard about that 2 days ago from a friend who works in a no-kill shelter. I’ve since found out that the recall started in early October. And yet we’re only hearing about it now. My friend only heard about it now, and look where she works! How bad did the Chinese melamine nightmare get, and how many pets died, before the media reported it?

I found this out from the AVMA pet food safety recall site. It’s a site for vets, and it looks like it updates as soon as the recalls are announced. I intend to check it 3 times a week.

Great link, Bill! I got emailed from a faithful reader on the 3rd, but didn’t read my email thoroughly until this morning. It behooves us all to be on the lookout.

And yes, when will it end? When some company finds they lose money by being sloppy and indifferent. And not before.

I was feeding my cats Nutro Indoor Weight Management dry food but just recently switch to Science Diet Light Weight dry food. Do you know if both of these food products are healthy? Do you have a suggestion on what I should be feeding them?

  4. Michael says:

    @Leo Olis

I’ve never liked Science Diet, they have too many grains and especially corn which is a big no no for cats. From my limited understanding though, Nutro is pretty good. I myself use Eagle Pack Holistic Blend.

I’m only half-joking when I suggest that perhaps all executives of companies that produce pet foods should be required to taste their products before selling them! That might make them a little more careful and/or conscientious!

i am also in a cat food dilemma ….. i had been feeding wysong,,, but they had some problems…. i am now trying chicken soup for the cat lovers soul….. any thoughts out there???

  7. WereBear says:

What I feed: EVO dry, with some Eagle Pack holistic Duck & Oatmeal dry, dusted with Brewer’s yeast, bowl out all the time.

Then they get canned twice a day (more when they are growing) which is either Friskies, EVO, or, on special occasions, Fancy Feast Medleys.

This illustrates certain principles for all cat folks:

    1) They gotta eat it. I’ve tried all kinds of stuff I get at the grocery store, the health food store, and the feed store. This is what they will eat.

    2) Low carb. I’d like to go all canned… but they get panic attacks if the bowl is empty. So I only offer stuff that is as non-grain as possible, with quality ingredients.

    3) Mix it up. I’ve deliberately gone for different manufacturers and sources. This makes for variety (they never know what they are getting.) But it also means that if the food is missing something, as in this recall, they have a reasonable shot at picking it up from their other foods. It also means if (heaven forbid!) there’s something wrong in it, they won’t get as much of the bad stuff. I hope.

This is my cats, in my location. I don’t have access to big pet stores, or a lot of choices. I had the feed store order the EVO for me when I found it online, and now it’s always in stock, since other cat folks like it too!

  8. catlindy says:

i like your point about mixing it up…. i have been trying to get one food for 3 different needs…. but if i mix it up they just all might get what they need
[EVO gave my cats the most amazing diarrhea]

  9. WereBear says:

Awww, catlindy! I’m sorry about that! (If you were following my suggestion.) That’s why #1 rule is if they eat it… and it agrees with them.

I do suggest emailing the manufacturer for a sample, even if they don’t offer it on the website. I think that’s only fair.

  10. catlindy says:

pammy, i found EVO all on my own…. …but it sure made an impact in the catbox…heeheee..
EVO is a good no grain food…maybe the change over from high corn crap has to be extra gradual to get their tummies used to it
. im keeping my fingers crossed that this new change will keep them all healthy…and peeing.

  11. marg says:

Thanks everyone for all these suggestions. Especially the Evo. Will have to go check that out.

To the person above who was using Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul, that IS a Diamond Product, produced out of the same Gaston, SC plant as the other product and WHERE all the problem dog food came from a couple years back (remember, they had the bad corn issue, unlike the Chinese problem)

Diamond is trying to be uber careful but let me tell you about their Gaston, SC plant. It’s there simply because of labor costs AND they get even “LESS” than what they pay for. The workers at that plant are in an area full of trailer courts, domestic violence, drugs, and poor school performance. In other words, they’re sloppy, lazy, inefficient, and in alot of cases, just plain DUMB.
Had to stop using Diamond Dog Food this fall because the formula changed around so much, it was linked to digestive system problems with my labs
I never had any probs way back when everything came out of Meta, Missouri (the original plant). Ofcourse, they were only making one brand, four of five varieties of Diamond Dog, and only like two of Diamond cat. It was good stuff then.
Now I’d rather in a pinch, use a store brand like Purina for a day or so.

Stick with Iams, Nutro, some of those. Diamond needs to get back to basics and in the process, close their Gaston plant for good.
