Dear Pammy, Why does my cat stare at nothing?

A reader writes:

Why does my cat stare into the corner like that?

Dear Readers,

They see something, or they hear something, or they feel something. That’s all.

But it is a lot, because cat’s senses are so keen. Their eyes are especially attuned to movement, so a glint of sunlight off a dustmote can transfix their attention until they are sure nothing is going to move again.

They are also listening, waiting for any squeaks or rattles that might indicate prey. It often looks as though they are staring, but they could be listening.

Cats also have whiskers on the backs of their paws that orient any close to the ground moves, pick up vibrations from the ground or floor, and keep track of what is happening in their paws. Cats walk on their toes, so they can pick up clues through their sensitive feet, too.

One of the cat’s spooky moves that has been misinterpreted is the cat’s behavior during thunderstorms. Cats hear every creak of the house as it moves in the wind, no matter how minor. The storm can overload the cat’s sensory processes with the flashes and loud noises, and torment the cat with creaks from all four directions.

Loud noises, from a dropped pan to a raised voice, can also overload the cat’s delicate defense system, which is set to trigger quickly. This is why we should reassure the cat that it is nothing to worry about, but only verbally. It is fine for the cat to withdraw, while we call soothing words at them.

In any overwhelming situation, cats will hide in an effort to reduce the input and feel safe. They should not be thwarted out of a desire to hold them or pet them; this will also be too much input. When suffering from anxiety, cats are more likely to misinterpret even the most loving gesture.

Cats are not sensing anything out of the ordinary; for them.

Cats have constant input coming in from all their senses, and most of the time, it’s better than ours. So by all means observe the cat’s behavior, and we might be surprised at how much we will be informed about our world.

    Hi there;
There’s no need to be alarmed and were not trying to scare you. Our cat is deaf and periodically stares at nothing. Recently he suffered a seizure. After researching feline seizures, staring at nothing is one of many signs.
    Sincerely,
    Concerned

Not to worry you it could not be it but my cat was staring into space or nothing and we thought it was nothing that he would get over it but we got the vet over and we found out that he had cancer and him looking into nothing was called Stargazing.
I dont want to worry you though its probably nothing

My cat is constantly staring into different parts of the room.
I thought it might have been the light’s reflection on the walls, but every time I look the direction he’s staring in, there’s nothing. He stares intently at a spot on the wall or the TV frame. He does this even when it’s late at night and there are no noises.
It worries me because we just found him after him being lost after 2 weeks. I just don’t know if he’s traumatized or something bad happened to him.
