I love the goofballs.
I have been assured by surfer venacular purists that “dudes” can be male or female. But boy cats are slightly more likely to have the genetic tendency towards a laid-back, cheerful, and humorous personality.
Dudes are not dumb cats; not necessarily. But they can appear that way because when they do rouse themselves for an intellectual task, they are difficult to deter, even if we have great input on the process we want to share.
It’s not that the Dude is not open to input. It’s that the Dude is enjoying themselves right where they are, and are not ready to move to the next stage yet.

Our Dudes have a important role to play in Cat Civilization. They cheer us up, and are a good influence on the other cats. Every group should have a goofball.
We are fortunate enough to have Reverend Jim, our Tank Boy, who is a developing a deadpan sense of humor. I brought home a cheeseburger from a favorite restaurant for Dear Husband, and after dinner RJ took over the wonderful-smelling paper bag.
He defended it from the inside against Olwyn, and prompted Mr Bond to look the bag over carefully to see why RJ liked it so much. He napped in it that afternoon, and then he and Olwyn tore it open playing with each other.
It is just like RJ to find wonder in small things.
We can worry that our Dude won’t “get it,” but while we do have to make an effort to get concepts across, they are also eager to please and want to make us happy. These cats can be less likely to go overboard with anxiety, and any they do exhibit is a sign we need to address right away.
Some cats find the Dude annoying. Cats with a high level of excitement find the Dude’s meditative state a challenge and a game. So we should watch over our Dudes and make sure their tranquil waters don’t get agitated.
Dudes can be assertive, and then they are stubborn, straight line thinkers. Encourage our Dude to enlarge their toolbag of requests, and we will have less bad behavior from them. These are very likely cats to accept that knocking over the pencil cup gets our immediate response, even if that is not an optimum response. They need to know there are better ways, maybe several times.
After all, the pencil cup works so well! Dudes are content with results.
Dudes are great comedians. They will get into ridiculous positions, and don’t mind if we enjoy their spectacle. Anything we respond to with enjoyment they will do again and again.
They are also wonderful lapsitting cats. The Dude’s cuddly nature, expressed both mentally and physically, means they are up for a cuddle any time, just maybe not a long one. After all, a Dude’s day is full of things to do; even if it mostly consists of being.
That’s another of their talents.
