Children and pets have a special affinity. Both have to deal with the demands and requests of those bigger than they are, and with whom communication is often imperfect. Both the child and the pet have someone to turn to, someone who shares their concerns.
In this article, How Pets Can Teach Your Kids Humanity, the author writes “While pet ownership is not required to teach humanity, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, children who develop positive feelings about pets gain self-esteem and self-confidence and build capabilities needed in trusting relationships with others.”
Cats request respect, a vital part of every relationship, and a skill everyone should learn. Cats, at any age, request that we treat them with regard and consideration all the time. Then they return it. All while being cuddly and amusing, affectionate and easy to maintain.
Cats. A good choice for any age.
We can teach others humanity by showing it to cats. By humane society indicators, cats get less medical care, less likely to get picked up in shelters, and are more likely to be rehomed several times. This disparity is part of people not understanding cats.
Because cats are thinking, feeling, beings, and we must treat them with the same consideration we should treat any other thinking, feeling, being.
That’s a wonderful thing to learn. At any age.
