Cats on Our Bed

Why do so many cats like to sleep with us? Because it’s perfect cuddle time.

Why do cats sleep on our bed? Because it’s so comfy and smells like us.

Add in the fact that cat breakfast and a new play opportunity often happens after we go to bed and get up again, and we have a bunch of reasons for cats to be interested in our bed.

If we are gone during the day, our cat will often sleep on our bed. Things are quiet in the house, letting them relax and not have to monitor events. It can also mean they miss us and want to feel near us.

At night, we are relaxed and quiet, not likely to dislodge a cat from their comfy resting spot. The cat is in touch with our situation; as soon as we get up, they will know.

Best bedspreads to share with our cat: get something easily laundered, and with a variegated pattern of some kind to help our cat distinguish movements under the covers as well as on top of them. Fuzzy materials will cling to cat hair more.

Many cats adore our bedroom, and want to spend time there. If we cannot let the cat have the run of our bedroom, we should choose another room in the house where we like to spend time, and will spend it with our cat. This will make up for leaving them out of the bedroom.

Sharing our furniture with our cat is a vital move in the relationship.

It makes all the other moves, possible.

Is our favorite room the one we stand around in? Never. It’s always a room with some kind of leisurely, fun activity. It could be eating breakfast. It could be making breakfast.

Any room, where we are relaxed and available for petting, can be our cat’s favorite room. A shared activity can actually be taking a nap together. It’s a relaxing activity for both of us.

Most cats, and most people, enjoy this most close of all times.

One of my cats sleeps next to my head at night, so I had to laugh when I saw your lolcat illustration, which reminded me of my own experience in the mornings. I have a theory that she thinks my (unfortunate) snoring is my way of purring.

Polar fleece is a wonderful thing. I picked a polar fleece blanket on sale in the grocery store a few years ago— about 6’ long and 3’ wide— folded it lengthwise, and put it on the foot of the bed. Cleo loved it (even now she’ll knead it and purr when she sets foot on it), and Yeti thought it was just fine.

Sadly, I have to close the bedroom door on work nights, as the kitten still doesn’t get that “bedtime means sleep.” He thinks it means “sleep until it’s dawn, then PLAY!” The other 2 cats aren’t so crepuscular.
And the “kitten” is 11 months old. So I don’t think he’ll ever learn.

Pammy, any new thoughts on cat insurance? The ASPCA member’s offer looks tempting, but I don’t want to spend money on 3 healthy cats without knowing that it isn’t like human insurance–meaning, a big rip-off that never pays when you need it.

My cats love to sleep with me and they are very good until 3 AM when they just have to go outside. Now the kittens who are 9 months old are only allowed in the bedroom every now and again, because they are sure they are supposed to run up and down my body. So there isn’t much sleep going on

my cats also love the polar fleece…. but i find it hard to de-fur,,,,and
it clogs up the washing machine
alas ,,i have even had to stop wearing it myself unless i want to look like a hairball

We have a 4 month old and a 6 month old kitten. We dont mind them on the bed, except they insist on waking me up with kisses in the middle of the night and they are so persistent. I want them to sleep on the foot of the bed and stay there. I need sleep.
