My contractor hubby secured the tree at the top with eye bolts in the ceiling and heavy wire from there to the tree when we had climbers. We always place the good stuff high up, and lots of cat friendly items low. This year there are 2 red metal jingle bells that just can't stay up, and we love hearing them fall over and over. Our danger this year is curling ribbon. My Romeo has been with us for 4 Christmases, and just this year decided to not just play with, but to consume the curling ribbon. After the second time forcing his mouth open to pull it out, I banned curling ribbon. It just can't be good for him. Merry Christmas!

Another concern is seasonal flowers like amaryllis, etc. Most plants that come from a bulb are dangerous for cats and some are deadly. Always check.

just a note: a few years ago, a friend of mine had a live christmas tree in a pot with water around, and their cat drank from it. Sadly, there also were chemicals in there, which meant that they ended up having to put the cat down.

I don't know if live trees are common in the US, but if they are, that's something to keep in mind.
