Cat Health and Heat Sources

Cats do love being warm. When we have heat sources in our home, we have to make sure they understand the dangers, as well as the delights, of snuggling up to these warm places.

Cats will follow a patch of sunlight around the room, or pose under a lamp. They love the feel of heat when the weather is cool. While their fur is insulating, this can work against them when they use our heat devices. They can cuddle up to something warm, not realize it is getting warmer, and their fur will keep them from noticing until it is quite hot.

In their quest for warm and comfy places, they can pull a towel down over a radiator or get drapes caught in baseboard heaters. So keep an eye on where they hang out, to make sure they aren’t causing trouble.

If they are fond of a place, try to mark out boundaries for them by placing a pillow, throw, or bed near the heat source, but not so close there would be dangers of overheating. This keeps them at a good distance, and get more, safer, heat.

If we do not put moisture in the air, and the humidity is low, the irritation to the cats is more than just zapping them when we reach to pet them.

Though that is bad enough.

They can also get dry, itchy, skin if the humidity is too low, especially Oriental-types. Add a bit of fish oil to their canned food, make sure their water is fresh, and consider a humidifier. It’s best for both of us.

Winter is a great time to cuddle up under a blanket. The cat will often want to join us. This can be a time to teach the cat when we plan to stay put for a while, the way they like cuddling. Once we are settled, call the cat. They might not join us right away, but the thought will have been planted, and they can take advantage of the situation the next time.

Cats can singe their whiskers with candles, so make sure those are placed out of the way, where they can’t be brushed by or knocked over. Supervise their use, and make sure they are out if we leave the room.

That way we can all enjoy the delights of the warm, cozy, room and the soft chair. For a cat, it’s one of the delights of the season.
