Well, cats can do that.
If we are loyal, too.
The loyalty of dogs is both immense and impervious to how the dog is treated. This is the nature of the dog. Whether this is viewed as a bug or a feature depends on the person.
Because it’s true; cats don’t do that. How a cat treats us is directly dependent on how we treat the cat. Which is also either a bug; or a feature.
Cats are reciprocal.
Cats do not have any innate behaviors that drive them to form relationships. If offered love, they will respond. If ignored, or worse, mistreated, they will avoid contact.
Getting loyalty from a cat requires giving it first.
We keep the routines running, we show an interest in them, we give affection. The cat will come to prefer spending time with us. They will seek us out to give us attention. They will hang out nearby because they want to look at us.
They can follow us from room to room, if we spend enough time there for them to feel comfortable settling in. If we give the cat a chance to spend time with us when we will be still, this encourages them to be nearby, and even sleep on some part of us.
If we are going to be sitting down for a while, we should call in the cat and show them attention every so often. This will trigger their curiosity, as well as bestow affection on the cat.
They will look forward to their time with us and miss us when we are away. When they get a chance, they will make a big fuss over us.
Is that loyalty? I think so.

There’s more ways to understand our cat with The Way of Cats than the article you are reading now. See all of my posts on WHY CATS DO THAT.

I found this to be true with my cats. They want to be wherever I’m at — one cat even wants to sit on my lap when I’m using the toilet!
Comparing cats to dogs, I’ve always thought of dogs as children and cats as adults.
This would make sense, my cat follows me around everywhere, always sleeps near me, and when i’m away longer than i am usually for work he will wander around looking for me, and stop eating until i return. He does that even though i have other roommates, it’s almost like i am the center of his life and when i’m gone he doesn’t know what to do, so he does nothing.
That’s excatly like my cat, he’s been living with us since we were both 7 and now we’re both 16 (im 4 months older than him) and even though my parents and brother are around he will ignore them and come straight to me, he even shares my bed, i just feel a close bond with him and i think he feels it to oespecially since i spoil him and he comes to me if he wants something becuase he knows i know how to do it
lol I love our cat and I’m sure she loves us too, but she never sits on any of our laps XD. But maybe that’s just her. She always rushes down and mews nonstop to greet us when we get home from a long day at work and rubs up against our legs. That’s good enough for me! But she still walks around like she owns our house and sometimes it does feel like we love her a bit more than she loves us, good thing we already know that’s not the case.
My kitten makes me feel really loved. When I’m home, she follows me every room I go. Even if i’m at the toilet, she comes over and sits in the shower waiting for me hehehe… My mom tells me she waits for me every night at the couch in front of the door, that’s really sweet. She also sleeps with me every night, sometimes at my feet or on my pillows. She gets out my bedroom like at 3am and then she comes back purring and meowing and lays on my chest for me to pet her <3 Some nights when I'm in my room, I close the door and she opens it, gets in and checks out the place and leaves. Then I close the door again, and five minutes later she does the same again hehe, and so on for 3 or 4 times. I really adore her and we've been together just for one year
I rescued my cat from neighbors who decided to use him as dog bait (they were trying to train their dog to kill raccoons). He was about 6 months old at the time, and I came home to find the neighbors shouting “GET HIM, BOY!” as their unneutered, unleashed dog ran the poor cat up a tree and waited at the bottom for him to have to let go and come back down (it was a tall pine with no low branches, so the cat was just clinging to the trunk and wouldn’t be able to stay up very long). I was SO ANGRY that I walked straight over, right past the neighbors who just stared at me, yelled at the dog to get away and called the cat. He looked at me, decided to trust me and came down into my arms. Ever since that day, he’s been the most loyal animal I’ve ever met (and I’m a vet tech). The neighbors had gotten him from a someone who had a bunch of feral cats with kittens, and I when I got him, he was nearly starved, covered in fleas, ticks and earmites and unneutered. I immediately took care of the fleas/ticks/earmites, started feeding him well and made the appointment to get him neutered as soon as he put on a little weight and was wormed (as per my vet), which didn’t take long at all!
Now, he follows me everywhere, comes running when called, waits for me to come home, sleeps next to me at night, and is just the happiest, most affectionate cat ever. It has been a year and a half since he was rescued and it was the best thing I think I ever did — I just adore this little animal! He turned me from a “dog person” into a “cat person” (I still love my dog, though). Cats get a bad rap for being unaffectionate, stubborn, etc. But it really isn’t true. Cats have different personalities, but there are definitely some very sweet, affectionate kitties out there!
@ Ema. I’m so glad you were there for your kitten!!! And I hope those neighbors of yours ROT in hell!!!!
I have had cats all my life and from what i have seen a cat picks one person and that is it. They could care less about anything else but the person (sleep, and food not included) much like a bird. we have four cats all found wandering on our farm. we have four members in our family (soon to be 6) so it works nicely.
my cat runs to the door when i come home and she loves to be picked up and held. she likes to be pounced up and down gently like a baby lol or rocked back and forth. she always likes me to hold her, ill just hold her in my arms and walk around the house and she’ll lay their and purr. she cuddles agaisnt me every night and sometimes sleeps with her head on my pillow.
when im really depressed like the other day i was crying, she heard me from the other room, and came to me, with these big eyes like “whats wrong??!” jumped up licked my hand, and curled up on my lap. it was so sweet, and she has not left my side for days, she knows im upset because my bf is out of town for a few weeks. i love my cat so much, sometimes i feel like she cares about me more than anyone else.
justine´s last [type] ..What are cat types?
Loyalty requires an amount of courage too. If one is met with dangerous threats, a cat will most likely flee for its life. On the other hand, a dog will most probably stay by the owners side, and in some cases, even die protecting the owner. This is the reason why dogs are held up as an epitome of loyalty whereas cats would be accused of lacking such values. If comparing to cats to dogs in a loyalty game, the cat would most definitely lose out. If one places loyalty as an important aspect in getting a companion, a dog would be hands down a better option.
I guess it all depends on what kind of cat you have, and how you treat them:
Cats can be guard animals too!
I cannot STAND the way some people portray the cat as being cold-natured and aloof and the dog being the greatest animal on earth. I realize people have different opinions and that is okay but almost everyone I meet seems to love dogs and hate cats. If it came down to a choice between a cat and a dog for me, a cat would definitely win. I find dogs annoying, clingy, and often downright stupid. They follow the leader of the “pack” without question because it is wired in them to defend and please their leader. It’s not loyalty, it’s instinct. Once they are given up to a new owner, they will quickly forget the last one. If a dog isn’t fenced in a backyard, it will run away while a cat will return. Cats are better character judges and will pick one person with care. If you give a cat love, it will return it. Dogs just go on instinct and impulse. Hands-down, cats are better. Period.
totally true.. people say cats arent loyal,, thats because people treat cats like crap. people that own dogs spends lots of time loving them and spend times in the house with them, and when they go for walks they go together. people that own cats alot dont understand them or treat them well.. people that lets cats roam free outdoors for example, they could be stolen by naieghbours that feed them and give them more love and attention. and if you a let a cat out all the time and only let it in to feed it, then thats what the cat exspects, if you love it like a child , like i see most indoor cat owners do.. they are super loyal… my cat always looks to me and follows me everywhere. i brought him home and spent most of the time giving him LOTS of lovve and attention when it was young and it is now nearly 5.. My dad is the one that puts food in his bowl, my dad is also the one that plays with him with toys. Yet he is still loyal to me. and pays no attention to my dad unless he feeding him or playing with him. as my parents say, the cat uses them, but genuinely loves me… and the reason is, I genuinely love him back and understand the cat..
someone stated cats are like adults and dogs are like children.. I agree again with that.. Like most adults we like the people we like and connect with, people that treat us good or make us happy. and at least for me anyway, It takes time for someone to win my loyalty and trust, but when they do, I am more loyal than the average person. i see cats the exact same..
dogs are like children in the sense, they are loyal to whoever is with them regardless of how the other treats them, and regardless weather the other person deserves their loyalty.
I guess thats why people think dogs are more loyal, because their loyalty comes easy, no matter how flawed the owner is. i am talking dispicable evil people.. you genuinely have to be a DECENT good person to make a cat happy.. because it takes a hell lot of love, patience, understanding, time, and brains to win a cat over….
Thats why i love cats, they are more challenging, they say cat owners are smarter, I certainly think so.. If you can make a cat happy and loyal to you.. YOU ARE A GOOD person.. noone bad can win a cats affection or loyalty
